BALL GET-OFF (16/20)

  • Has good first-step quickness but lacks ideal acceleration beyond that
  • Excellent snap anticipation/reaction time

RUN DEFENSE (17/20)

  • Very capable edge-setter
  • Good stack-and-shed ability
  • Can make some pursuit plays from the backside due to effort but average speed limits playmaking radius
  • Knows when to squeeze gaps and sheds blocks in a timely manner
  • Inconsistent tackler in space

TECHNIQUE (13.5/15)

  • Has a good collection of pass rush moves and counters — long arm, forklift, chop, rip, club, swipe, spin
  • Potent inside swipe and club/swim moves
  • Good hand placement/arm extension vs. the run
  • Plays with leverage on a consistent basis

POWER (12/15)

  • Has shown the ability to convert speed-to-power with effective bull rush, long arm and forklift moves
  • Good functional strength to hold up as a front-side run defender

FLEXIBILITY (9/15)

  • Struggles to turn the corner at tight angles with speed/bend alone
  • Shows minimal hip flexibility

PHYSICAL TRAITS (5/5)

  • Good size for 4-3 defensive end position at 6-4, 265
  • Good length — 34 1/8″ arms

MOTOR (4/5)

  • Motor consistently runs hot against the run and pass

SPEED/AGILITY (3/5)

  • Average speed and acceleration
  • Struggles to change direction with suddenness

RED FLAGS

  • Tore ACL as high school senior in 2014

OVERALL GRADE: 79.50/100.00 — 2ND ROUND — Complimentary starter or raw player with star potential

SCHEME FIT: 4-3 DE

DRAFT PROJECTION: LATE 1ST ROUND

“Clelin Ferrell is a technique-based pass rusher with good first-step quickness and power. He is a strong run defender with good stack-and-shed ability and strength at the point of attack. He has good size for a 4-3 defensive end, and his motor consistently runs hot.

Most of Ferrell’s weaknesses are related to his athletic profile. Ferrell doesn’t have great acceleration/closing speed beyond the first step, and he doesn’t show much flexibility when attempting to corner on offensive tackles. He has shown the ability to soften the edge with pass rush moves and power, but his inability to win around the outside track on a consistent basis will always limit his pass rush upside to a degree. Ferrell’s athletic limitations may prevent him from becoming a consistent double-digit sack producer at the next level, but his power, football IQ, refined technique and motor give him a solid floor as a three-down player.” – Dan Wussow
